When you won the US Open, was there things that you were working on? Your swing, you've talked about the process, which means you almost use it as a distraction for yourself. You said you had new irons, that was confidence.
Something fresh.
Something fresh. Do we need that, sometimes?
Oh absolutely. I mean not just professional golf, professional golf you're playing 30 tournaments a year, you're doing the same thing every day. You need new things, even though it's the same, it's something different to you, new irons, a new swing thought.
You put the ball down, your brother was helping you with staying down.
Yeah.
You were seeing results, you finished Top 10 the week before in Arkansas. You go to the US Open, put us there, with your warm up and everything. Show us what your swing looks like and how you do it.
So I would first warm up with a few pitches, and then just start hitting some full wedges. Then I'd hit some mid-iron full swings. I have a drill that I just started doing, which I just had a good finish in Hawaii. I like new things.
75 the first day, I was following your score. I texted you on your 67 the second day, it was a good comeback.
It was.
What was the difference between the 75 and 67? Too much pineapple?
No, definitely not. But it's a constant battle, and my attitude, I played nine holes on the first day. Playing great, burning edges, made one bad swing and shot one over. And I'm like, what the heck, you know? I just played such a-- and my attitude wasn't great and my brother kept telling me, you're so close, you're so close.
This was after the Thursday round?
Yes.
Yes. I was--
Three over?
I was in a mess because--
Two over.
I made three bogeys, three over.
Yeah, three over.
Because I had a bad attitude.
And what is a bad attitude for you?
Well, like I just said, I played nine holes--
Feeling like you weren't getting anything out of it, you were feeling bad for yourself.
I'm like, OK, I make one bad swing in nine holes and hit great shots, and I shoot one over par. Instead of thinking man, I'm playing really good, let's go get this back nine. I always have my brother, he's always telling me that. I just had a sour attitude and I shot 3 over because of it. So, I went back and then I shoot 67, 66. It's funny, on Sunday, the same thing happened to me on the front nine.
Just kind of got flat?
Didn't get anything, but I said, you know what, I'm going to be positive. And I shot two under. That's the difference, just a good attitude.
You turned 75, missed cut in Hawaii into a good check.
Exactly, you just have to be aware of it and it's something I always have to work on. But a good attitude is everything.
