My first true lesson, golf lesson. My dad was a pretty good golfer. I think at his best, he was two or three handicap. And my first lesson was with old Dick Harmon. And I had two or three good lessons with him at River Oaks.
Yeah, they brought you over to Houston.
My dad brought me over, and at that time, I think it was three or four or $500 an hour. It was really out of our realm. But my dad's like--
That sounds expensive now.
It was really expensive. I think it might have been 350. I can't remember what it was. My dad would know that answer. But I remember in my head, holy cow, my dad's spending this much money for a two-hour lesson. And the funny thing is, Dick was amazing. He was so sweet. And we show up, and we're at River Oaks, and I'm blown away how nice this place was.
Oh yeah.
Still to this day, it's a great, great country club. He brings me out on the range. We're hitting balls. And I think, I remember hitting-- To this day, I remember hit an eight iron to this green, probably 100 something yards away, and I hit one, two, three, maybe six shots. And they're just kind of off to the edges, and maybe one right at it. And I'm sitting there just kind of, I'm kind of nervous, but I'm hitting some pretty good shots, and one thin, and one maybe a little bit heavy, but they're all pretty straight. And Dick's like, he keeps asking me, like, what do you think about those shots? And I said well, the first one I pulled.
So the very first lesson, we go into his office. He shows me a couple of things in my swing. He pulls this book down that was signed by Bob Rotella. Bob Rotella's original book, Golf Is Not A Game Of Perfect. It is signed by Bob Rotella to Dick, and Dick gives me that book. He said, take this home and read it. And to this day, I still have that book, and if it was the start of my whole new career and trying to learn this crazy, tough, challenging game of golf.
That's great story. Dick Harmon was one of my best friends and grew up helping me with my game, and I was with his boys and everything growing up, took him hunting and everything. It was a great family.
