Jason Dufner: Equipment - Bounce and Grind for Wedges

Jason Dufner discusses the bounce and grind for his wedges.

Transcript

OK Jason, we are in my favorite part of the channel, filming about equipment. We're in your great new house in your room. These are all the major championships you've played by years. Is that true?

Yep, that's true. I started up there in 2001 at Southern Hills and just kind of collected them and had some people that I consider friends out on the tour sign them.

Winners-- did you see the winner of the event, et cetera?

Yep, and then we'll just keep going until I'm not playing majors anymore.

We've laid out your clubs here. What we would like to do is for you to go through the clubs. Tell us exactly what model it is, in the wedges particularly, why you have them [INAUDIBLE] spinner, shaft, et cetera. Give us a run down on the 60.

Yeah, this is a Titleist Vokey, 60 degree. The grind is kind of a special grind. It's not one they produce.

It's actually one I talked to Lee Trevino about. He showed me a couple that he had done. Said he used one in the late 70s, early 80s that was very similar to this, and then kind of went back to it.

And Lee was saying that you wanted this piece in the back rounded?

Yeah, he likes a really small soul. And you have some camber off of it and a lot of heel relief. And it gives you kind of more of a action, speed through the grass.

Pretty good out of the bunker. I was using one that was a lot wider for a while, which is really good out of the bunker. And then I just have your spinner shafts, super stroke grip.

The spinner shaft is made by True Temper. It's a special shaft just for wedges to add about 300 more revolutions.

Yeah, you get about 15% more--

Spin.

Spin.

And you're into that. And then of course you use super stroke grips.

Yep, I've got a full cord and a rib in there.

That's what, a 60?

Yep.

So you're the same size as me. 60 is a pretty small grip. Like Stacy Lewis, for example, she uses big 58 but everyone's different, right?

Yep, and I build it up a little bit underneath. But yeah, I got all Vokey wedges.

That you jump from 60 to--

56.

And you told me that every one of your clubs is four degree increment.

They should be.

Should be. Should be. And how much do you check them?

Probably once a month.

Do you?

Pretty easy out on the tour. You just drop them off to somebody and they know what they're supposed to be.

This is a 56 Vokey model SM6, 6 degrees bounds.

I think it's a F Grind is what they say.

S Grind?

F Grind. I think it's got a little bit more bounce. 14 bounce they put on the soul there.

OK, and you like that one in the middle because you can hit this off of spongy lawn?

Off the turf, yeah. I don't use my 56 much out of bunkers. If we get real soft, fluffy sand, I might go to it. Because you open a club up, you open it up. It doesn't matter if it starts at 60 or 56, you're getting to the same point, right?

And when you've got 14 degrees bounce, if you open that up, you can see right there on the camera how high the front edge is off the table right there, right? That would be the amount of bounce we're looking at right there.

Definitely. So it's good out of soft sand, which we see sometimes on tour.

Yeah, and splash it out of there.

Splash it out of there.

That's your 52.

52, same thing, F Grind. Same shaft.

Spinner.

Same grip. Yep, pretty basic.
